If it's getting a bad connection on just one of the pins, that might happen.
I once had a PC do some very weird things which were fixed by just reinserting
the SIMMs.

The PPC need some RAM (512KB) to work at all. It's disabled otherwise.

Yes, perhaps - I know someone who ran their machine as 68k because the fan
on the PPC failed, and any PPC app would crash immediately.
