No this is an extreme movement (Like someone was using the LAmiga key and
cursor keys to move the pointer while I'm trying to move it around) it
sometimes stops if I stop moving the mouse, and it is in a random
direction.

I've just got a cheapo Trust mouse (strangely enough called an Ami Mouse
Scroll) which works very nicely indeed. It is ever so slightly jerkier than
my old amiga mouse (IIRC becuase all PC mice update less often), but
nothing compared to having it on my serial port.
