If the fan failed, then the fan was faulty. Hardly p5's fault, they'll
have just bought them in a batch, with the manufacturer of the fan
certifying them as working.

Fans can fail for any number of reasons, some weird/unpredictable, and
some for general maintenance, like you mentioned. Sometimes you get
that freak occurance of one from a batch dying for no apparent reason.
Cosmic rays and that sort of stuff :)

I forget how long the fan took before it failed (was a year
mentioned?). Try breaking anything electronic to a point where it is
unrepairable, after a lengthy period of time and see if you can get a
discount or full cost replacement. I doubt you'd get one from any
company, simply because it's not financialy viable. If you do one,
then you'd have to do them all. p5 were in a bad enough financial
situation without having to fork out 600 quid each time a fan failed.
