Hi Richard.
I have my A3000 connected to a cable modem.

Sure you can use your Amiga as the gateway, but you'll need 2 ethernet cards
and an ethernet hub (or switch). One card goes to the cable modem and the
other goes to the hub for the other machines on your LAN. You won't be able
to use regular Miami for this type of setup, you'll need MiamiDX to support
2 ethernet interfaces at the same time, for firewalling (I really suggest
having a firewall), and for IP NAT (a must).

Bah! They set that spec because that is what the software they give out
requires. Though, be warned that they will not offer you any software
support if you don't use what they say in their specs.

>From my experiences, helping friends set up their Windows boxes, those free
hours CD's are basically online registration programs. What they do is when
you register a new account using them, they credit your account with a
number of "free" hours. But as part of the registration process they
require a credit card number, so that when you use all your free hours, they
start charging the excess hours to you credit card.
With the cable ISP's I've read about (and the one I use), there is no limit
on hours used and only charge a flat fee each month (one of the big selling
points of cable access).
Cheers,
Darin.
