This might me the "reset line" problem. Some hard drives don't like the
reset signals from an Amiga, and a soft reset can overtake a complete hard
drive reset if you have a CD-ROM and resident IDE software of some
description... That's my experience of it anyway. Try cutting the reset wire
on your IDE cable. It's pin 1, the one with the stripe. The hard drive
doesn't usually need it, so it can be safely removed.
