Subject:Syslog

Hello Chaps,

I was present at a Linux presentation last night which was, amongst
other things, about syslog. It was quite interesting and it made me recall that the Executive author, Pertrin Nordlund had ported a version of Syslog to the Amiga.

So armed with my newly found loggy knowledge, I decided to have another go
at installing it. For those that don't know you can "log" stuff to the
"system log" (pretty obvious I suppose) by a variety of methods. You also
end up with a LOG: device where you can redirect log calls etc. Quite nifty
really.

Anyway, what I've found, and remembered from the last time I tried to use
it, is that if I so much as sniff the config file with a text editor, the
next time I start the syslog daemon, it crashes as soon as it reads the
config file. I spent ages resaving the thing in a variety of editors but
all to no avail. The only way I can change the default setup is to edit the
file in Xemacs prior to installation, then wang the file over to the Amiga
and run the installer. Which is pants.

Anyone else running Syslog then?

Tara!
