I have sent this already to interactive, but I thought I would repost
here to open up a free for all discussion......
Although, I generally welcome the news from St Louis, I cannot help
but feel that it wasn't significant enough to warrent the tag "earth
shaking".
As I have already said to Fleecy elsewhere, the move to integrate
OS4.2. PPC with the DE in future, is good for the existing Amiga
community, but totally hopeless in terms of "recruiting" new users to
the platform. Add to that the publicly damaging split with WarpOS, the
lack of any mention of the AmigaOne on the Bplan website and I feel a
bit pessamistic about the future of the platform.
That is to say that, given the current situation, the community may
split into two camps between AOS4+ and MorphOS. Isn't it small enough
already.
I cannot see any day with the current annnouncements where Amiga will
become a spoken word in the high streets and in rooms across the world
once more. Let alone being able to purchase stuff in your high street
shop or local retail park.
I also find it difficult to accept that the tie up with sharp is
official with them. Again there is no mention of it on their website,
to confirm the tie up.
Amiga are going to have to prove that they are more than merely an
"after thought" to the recent announcements and not as it would seem
"getting in via the back door" through their relationship with TAO,
who must be getting fed up with this situation.
What about the AROS project? Sure you claim to be in contact with them
on a weekly basis, but don't Amiga think it would be great to have an
AOS clone running on another type of hardware?
Having said all that I will purchase the AmigaOne and AOS4.0 if the
prices are not extortionate.
To recap, nothing has really changed, the Amiga OS development
continues (thank you) but we will remain a minority platform, and
possibly even smaller thanks to the MorphOS situation.
