It is not a straight path, it is a T. It can't be both. A straight line
has two ends, a T has three.
The SCSI spec specifically prohibits "stubs" longer than four inches.
That's just enough to allow for cabling inside an external device.
The fact that it works after a fashion doesn't mean that it is right, or
that it will continue to work.
Your setup has another fault, according to your diagram, only one
terminator.
