You shouldn't fiddle with DOSTypes if you don't know what you're doing.
Run HDToolbox and restore the DOSType to the default value given by SFS
1.84 (something like 0x53465300), then reformat and try again.
For the ultimate help on hard drive problems I wholeheartedly recommend
to join the os3xlist at amiga.com and asking the one and only Joanne Dow.
Just make sure you don't forget to mention you are still using OS3.1.
