But it would need twice as much space! Actually there is such a
tool. It's called 'copy' :-)

Good idea. There was a port of ext2 FS a long time ago. I believe
is was when there were endian problems in the EXT2 code in the Linux
kernal (block pointers or something similar was stored in machine
specific format). Not sure where to find this but I'd suggest the
68K Linux mirrors.
