i think it'd be quicker to let a whole frame be calculated and then
do a 16bit-8bit on it (possibly as part of C2P).this way you couldd have a
table of all the colours used and then make a suitable pen-map for it
(anyone with gfx card doesnt need 16-8, and they dont need C2P either)
