Hello Alan
First of all, thanks for the reply confirming my suspiscions :-)

My Apollo 060 board is supposed to be the 66Mhz version. From the various
other Apollo060/66 users I have talked to it appears I have the wrong 060
chip on the board?
My chip is a revision 1, where as everyone (except one) else I have talked
to with the same board have a revision 5 060. Thier 060 chips also have a
letter 'A' at the end of the number on the actual 060 chip.
I aint gonna touch the bloomin chip again either! I still have the 'burn'
mark on my thumb from when I touched it yesterday :-/

Yep, see below - The whole reason I got the 66Mhz version was for the FPU.
If I didnt want to do 3D rendering I would have made do with the 75Mhz
FPUless version of the chip. The 66Mhz version cost a extra 100quid and
then I got the extra simm socket installed onto it at the time (another
20quid). Came to 326 quid in all inc P+P

Yep, thats what I reckon it is. I occasionally get lockups and crashes for
no reason at all (in . The crashes and lockups all happen when the FPU is
being put to heavy use in games (Quake and Nightlong for example) or if I
attempt to do any 3D rendering - C4D reports loads of errors so it wont
render (infact, I think the error message mentions the FPU), Lightwave aint
even usuable on my setup because of the speed I get - it ran faster on my
Apollo040/25! (again, due to the FPU I guess)
Quake usually runs for about 2 minutes and then lockes up, Nightlong lasts
longer but depends on the scene I am stood in. If I run from a COLD boot I
usually get a couple of minutes longer out of each game before they lockup.
Which I suppose does indicate that FPU has got up to and exceeded its
maximum working temperature. I still get all the Graphics problems from the
games which does still indicate it is straining the FPU.
Unfortunately I cant put the Apollo040 back in because its edge connector is
worn out and it is a swine to get it to work (the card has to be at a exact
angle)
> I'd use other tools, such as sysspeed to look at the FPU.
Yep, used all kinds of testing toold now. sysinfo reports the FPU as being
there, but it only recognises the chip as a 040, but I guess thats because
it was made long before the 060 was available to buy at a realistic price
(still aint a realistic price! ;-) )
Strangely enough, AIBB and Sysspeed both crash when I try them. AIBB crashes
as soon as it evaluates the system on startup and Sysspeed tends to lockup
in other areas (fpu testing type thing again!)
Anyway, I rang Eyetech today and got a Returns Number so hopefully they will
discover the same problems as I have done. I am not sure where I stand on
getting a replacement though because I bought it at the end of last
Novemeber. I thought it was strange I was getting graphics problems at the
time but put it down to the fact I didnt know what the 060 should and
shouldnt do. I only got Nightlong (and quake free) at the altWoA show so
this is when I found out about the main problems.
