Welcome to the list!
The first rule of diagnostics is eliminate whatever you can prove works!
It's unlikely you have two duff drives so check the connections. The red
marked ribbon (usually) goes next to the power cable on a 3 1/2 inch drive.
Your interface should be marked to show where pin one is. Pin one is the red
one! (Some drives have a pin missing, see where that is in regards to the
ribbon cable and make sure it matches both ends. After all, it doesn't
really matter where the red end goes, so long as it goes to the same side at
each end) Once you are sure that the ribbon cable is the right way round
it's time to try something else.
I've connected the ribbon cable the wrong way round on a PC with no damage
done other than the fact that it doesn't boot!
