I think this is the way to go, really. I eventually copied my 3.1 to another
partition, installed 3.5 clean, and then copied over stuff and tried
it as I went. I still find the odd library I need to copy over, when I
run some piece of obscure software I haven't used for ages!

I'll keep plugging away at it. I've at last found some docs, installed
on my 3.1 partition, so the settings are making more sense now.
