Hardware really isn`t an issue. Particularly not with the new PCI solutions,
and the A1 around the corner. I`m not a hardcore gamer, so I don`t need
cutting edge performance in that respect. Even classic hardware is fine for
my needs. But whilst I was the only computer user in the house 12 months ago
this is changing...
Sadly it`s in bredth of software that the gap is growing. I`m a computer
hobbyist, so the fun for me is working out how to stretch AmigaOS and its
software. That`s a challenge. Unfortunately as my family grow, they want to
use preschool software and in the fullness of time things like CD/DVD
Encyclopaedia packages, and in these areas Amiga OS is not blessed :/
Likewise, my wife (who smashes up looms in her spare time) has discovered the
web and email. I can offer her excellent email capabilities through Microdot
or Yam, but regardless of the state of the Amiga browsers (which /I/ enjoy
using) she needs to have the "benefits" of Nutscrape or IE (by which I mean
that whilst they crash from time to time, they usually displays pages in the
manner the author intended). Now we know why this is, with testing taking
place on a limited number of browsers, but that`s no excuse for anyone, as it
were, on the outside. Suggest that the web page can`t be viewed because of
the authors refusal to follow standards, even though all her friends can view
it with no problems and I`ll be laughed out of court :(
An option I suppose is to move to an A1 and use Mac software under IFusion,
but I really need a 5 year old to be able to start up and shut down. And more
importantly I`m potless having moved to x86 hardware to take advantage of the
emulation layer in the DE, which now seems not to be happening. So as I said
I seem to have made my bed, and I`m going to have to lie on it.
Sadly I seem to excluded myself from further use of the Classic OS, and
ironically I have achieved this by preparing for it`s arrival :/
And I`m not happy about that. It`s no-ones fault, it`s just the way things
are I`m afraid.
