Proprietary and bastardised formats are one of the main tools used to
give one OS advantages over the others. It's one of the ways Microsoft
have cornered the desktop computer market.
The other thing we're missing is the sheer breadth of software available
on Windows, and, to a lesser extent, Linux and MacOS. There are things
we cannot do, not because the hardware isn't up to the job, but because
no one is prepared to write the software for it. You only have to look
at the amount of new PDA software coming out to see that it's hardware
sales, not hardware power that gives programmers the incentive to
create.
