Virus checkers usually only pick up viruses they already know...

Of course not, anything could have some kind of back door in it, we
just have to take there words for it.
The ones to look out for are unoffical patches to major programs,
remember the virus in "new" versions of Poolmem and fastIprefs ?
I'd say with something like that unless the actual author makes a
statement on there website, it's best to wait before using it

If it were a good one it would remain in wait until either an event
has triggered it, or it receives instructions for the internet or
something (aka Netbus/back orifice).
