Or you could have installed some MCC's you shouldn't have. I had a
problem whereby some classes bundled with MUI 3.9 (for MorphOS)
should be in my MUI 3.9 directory but accidentally got installed for
MUI 3.8 - and hence, MUI 3.8 stopped working properly exactly as
you describe.

I would do a clean (and I mean **CLEAN**) install of MUI 3.8 and
only install the classes you can find on Aminet, or author's
homepages.

And if you DID tamper with the classes, taking them from other
archives like the MorphOS ones, then BAD BAD BAD!! *slaps wrist*
