I would imagine you would need an Mpeg Audio datatype ; )
I have also found that when converting mpeg wavs to aiff for example, using,
say Second Spin, then I had to change the .wav extension to .mp3 before the
program would recognise the files and convert them. This might be the case
for any program that uses file extension techniques to identify a file
rather than file sniffing which is more thorough. (Play16 would just say
that the mpeg wav was corrupt, and programs like delitracker would just play
hiss, until I changed the extension, and then they played ok). ; )
