the author of XAnim is working on a new player which will be VERY easily
portable to any OS
and it seem's it will have almost all codecs available (some doesn't like to
support linux etc. so...)
or demands money to do ports (and for a freeware program that is hard to
justify.

the author of SVQ1 (Sorenson codec) has even stated that the only format's
really needed now is
the 3ivX and OpenDivX since they give the best results (he even states that
his own codec isn't as good as those soo....).
