Depending on how new the chip itself is, it could probably run happily at
66MHz perfectly reliable. My Blizzard's 56MHz, cos I had a 56 crystal handy... RS
components do them, as do Farnell and Maplin.

I wouldn't recommend pulling the fan off, they're usually stuck on with a
type of heat conducting epoxy resin which is very strong, and you could
break your chip if you manage to get it off at all, or leave a bit of the
heatsink on it, resulting in an uneven surface. But, then again, buying a
single 68040 part will cost you serious money from regular suppliers. I came
across an MC68020 part in an electronics catalogue, and it was priced at upwards
of £100 sterling, so I'd be guessing an 040 would cost you three times that
:(
