We covered some of this in issue 3. Much of it is dependent on your ISP.
An MTU of 576 used to be best for 28k modems, maybe even 33k, with 1500
being better for faster speeds.But many ISPs use dialup servers that are
locked to a specific figure, so it doesn't matter what you use.

It also depends to an extent on what you are using the connection for. A
bit of trial and error is often the best way to determine the best
settings for your situation.
