True. In fact one of the reasons that Titanic was so badly crippled was that
she was trying to beat Olympic's record across the Atlantic. (A suicidal
thing to do when icebergs are in the area!)
Titanic was, so it goes, the first ship to issue an S.O.S. as the usual
signal was something like C.Q.D! (Meaningless three letters that could not
be confused as part of a message, S.O.S. is quicker to type out in Morse and
doesn't mean 'save our souls'!)
The Titanic sinking was a catalogue of misunderstandings and blind faith in
a flawed idea!
Read Dr Robert Ballard's book, it's very poignant!
The other odd thing is that the word Titanic itself is now associated with
disaster rather than it's true meaning i.e. 'of the Titans' that is,
gigantic! (Which, funnily enough, was the name that was to be bestowed on
the Britannic)
