What is SUSA

SUSA = Stirling University Students’ Association, i.e. the body of students at the University of Stirling. All students (full-time and part-time!) at the University of Stirling are automatically members of SUSA, although you do have the legal opportunity to choose to rescind that membership. They are formally represented by elected officers

WHAT IS NUS?

NUS = National Union of Students. This is a national body to which SUSA and hundreds of other students’ unions are affiliated. As a member of SUSA, Stirling students are automatically members of NUS. NUS is divided into sub -organisations such as NUS Scotland. NUS represents students on a national scale, politically, as well as providing training, and entertainment and commercial services.

WHAT DOES SUSA DO?

SUSA’s main function is representation.

Beyond this it is specifically concerned with the lives of students in :

J WELFARE

J RIGHTS

J SOCIAL & RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES

J SPORT

J BARS, CATERING & ENTERTAINMENTS

J CAMPUS MEDIA

J CAMPAIGNS ON STUDENT-RELEVANT ISSUES

Further to this SUSA is a provider of services in terms of general information and support, shop, print room, and it’s bars and catering facilities.

What are SUSA’s assets?

SUSA’s assets are - strictly speaking - it’s premises: the bars and catering facilities. As well as that - and even more importantly - are it’s staff, and the knowledge and information contained in the records. Our most important asset is, ideally, an active membership. The more students who get involved in anything beneficial to the student body - the more effective SUSA’s work becomes.

How does SUSA work?

SUSA operates within the parameters of it’s own Constitution. This is democratically determined by its membership, via General Meetings, Council Meetings, and Elections. SUSA is a successful organisation and is one of the best maintained Student Associations in the country, with committed staff and a friendly atmosphere.

What is SUSA Council?

The Council is known officially as the Student Representative Council (SRC). As a Council member - you are therefore there to talk for other people.

If you are an Undergraduate Rep. - your main representation covers your fellow undergraduates; Postgraduate Reps. do the same for postgraduate students; and First Year Undergraduate Reps. are -surprise!- principally representatives of first year undergraduate students.

The Executive Committee is involved in the day-to-day running of the Association - and each have specific responsibilities

Liberation & Equality

Liberation & Equality are central to the student movement and to SUSA. We have many reasons to be proud of our levels of involvement and representation - but there always remain opportunities to improve what we have.

Elected Council Officers

SUSA has elected International, Disabled, Mature, LGBT and Women’s student officers. Of these the Women’s Officer is elected autonomously.
