I got to the show about 3pm and it took me 30 minutes to realise that
it was almost abandoned in a tower at the back of Eyetech's stand.
I know the main demos were supposed to have been earlier but
I was disappointed they couldn't have left it turned on with
something running on it; unless of course, nothing does. Even some
sort of "Kickstart" screen ;) would have been encouraging. Something
should've worked because they had a couple of PCI cards plugged in,
unless that was just for show.
Anyway, I think the show was quite good although very cringe-worthy
because most of the products seemed so prehistoric: does anyone
need 2.5" hard drives anymore and all the 2nd hand software from
almost a decade ago ? Let me not mention too much about flickery PAL
monitors and horrible interlaced modes that made me shudder.
Even Ray's excellent demos seemed to involve several reboots because
of poorly behaved hacks.
For me the whole experience just made me feel like the Amiga is
dying. What I want is AI to get their arses into gear and come up
with the DE and OS5.0 ASAP so I can have a modern computer with the
Amiga look-and-feel without the legacy. The Kickstart show just
felt like a Dr Who convention or something. Maybe next year
there'll be something that'll draw the crowds on a sunny day ?
