Geez. Personally I wouldn't bother with an Amiga... I'd buy a pc. Sacrilege
I know, but a sad fact as the Amiga can't compete in any area's except
graphics and cd-writing (at a stretch).

But if you were set on it I'd either buy an A1200 and tower it up with this:
Yamaha or Plextor cd-rom.
Yamaha (8824 is good) or Plextor cd-writer, and MakeCD.
Biggest ide hard drive you could get, and os3.5 or 3.9 so you could use it.
graphics is a problem, but I'd get a Mediator or Prometheus or SharkPPC with
a Voodoo gfx card (whichever drivers actually support 3d the best, if at
all), and a G3 card to go with it.
But then you won't be able to use most Amiga software, so you'd have to get
at least an '040 accelerator as well, for things like Photogenics.
Candy Factory is a brilliant program, but doesn't like WarpOS, so you'd have
to disable that (by swapping the picture.library in Classes/datatypes with
a pre os3.9 one.
God knows what you'd so for music, the miggy is pathetic in hardware and
software for that.
Internet is also crap compared to what pc users enjoy.
You could program anything, but if it's to run on a pc you'll have to get
one to test it on.

Check out Amibench for some good stuff being sold.

Alternatively you could wait for the AmigaOne, which will hopefully be
released in August, and see if that will have enough faetures and
software/os to be reasonably useful.

But buy a pc if you need to do anything decent soon.
