If you haven't partitioned it, and have no filesystem on it, you will
not lose anything. And I'm guessing that size you quote is the one in
the first display of HDToolbox, in which case it's calculating the
size of the drive and takes no FS stuff into account.
You lose a fair chunk with the conversion. Do the maths:
(41.1 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000) / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 = 38.277....
I have no idea where the other 7Gb disappeared, unless you misread
38.1 as 31.8??
However, the real size of the disk should be calculated from the
physical setup on the disk (cylinders, heads, sectors, etc). It's
possible that HDToolbox got those wrong (it gets nearly every other
size wrong :). You could try redefining the disk and putting the
proper values in, which you'd get on the manufacturers website I would
think.
