don't know much about HiSoft C but there might be some tweaking of some of
the proto/inline/pragma headers, my suggestion would be to go for either
vbcc or gcc

I used gcc for my C++ class and gcc is ALOT more up to the C++ standard than
for instance Visual

get vbcc if you don't have any inclining for C++ but if you know you will
wan't to dabble with
C++ go for gcc (or both :-) since they are both free

with regards to using SAS/C, hisoft C, maxxon C, DICE I would stay clear of
those on newer
projects since they are not up to the current ANSI/ISO C/C++ standard and
therefore can make
porting the code to a new compiler more difficult than it really should be.
