so the problem isn't that you can't view JPEGs but that you can't view
24 bit images.

And here is the problem. V43 was the first version of picture.datatype
to support 24 bit images.

The version command is reporting the version of the datatype in memory,
the one you are actually using. Somehow you have managed to keep two
copies of picture.datatype on your hard drive and the old version is
being loaded. Use Find to track down all copies of picture.datatype on
your boot partition, I suspect the old one is in SYS:Libs as that is
searched before SYS:Classes, the correct location for datatypes.
