Dunno if this helps at all (I'm not a techie), but this is what I have in my
user-startup:
run >NIL: Birdie ? <Env:Birdie.prefs
And I just use the Birdie prefs to tell it where the patterns are.
It's the latest birdie and prefs.
I suggest eyepoppers as the best patterns for gfx card owners.
This system is os3.9, and running Dopus Magellan as wb replacement.
