These tapes aren't chewed. One that I looked at had little dents all
along the tape at roughly 3 inch intervals - obviously catching on
something.

But with the top off, I can see nothing going wrong with the transport.

The damaged tapes show noise bars on other players as well, of course.
So it's not a dirty head.

The problem is, it's too risky to put any undamaged tapes in it.
