It seems to depend - I have a 1240 as well, and none of my EDO RAM would
work - although it was mostly 50ns, but my 70ns FPM SIMM works fine.

Hmm, perhaps its just rather corroded? Mine has a rather standard CR2025 3v
battery in it; just pull the pin up a bit, pull out the battery and replace
it. If yours is rather corroded, you may wish to give it a good scrub with
steel wool.
