Quite correct. I believe that both are third party products with a similar
design philosophy and technical implementation. The one Amiga announced is
a stand-alone product officially adopted by Amiga, which will allow
individuals to create their own Amigas using off-the-shelf x86 hardware or
companies to sell Amigas based on x86 hardware in all sorts of
configurations - laptops, towers, etc. We haven't had a chance to play
with this one yet, but I expect it to be pretty similar in terms of raw
performance to the one we discussed. For anyone who hasn't read the mag
yet, be prepared to smile a lot.

The one we were sent is an independent effort which sits on a host OS.
Obviously much of what is said above could be applied to this one, but I
believe it has some technical and implementation differences which will
mean that it will appeal to a slightly different audience.

I think the important thing to observe here is that we will, very shortly,
be running classic Amiga software on hardware with significantly greater
capability in graphics, hardware support and sheer processing horsepower
than any currently existing Amiga. I believe this is a very important step
in ensuring a useable and viable transitional environment as we head
towards the AmigaDE content layer and OS5.0. As exciting as the PPC
environment for AmigaOne is, the ubiquity of x86 hardware quite simply
means a much larger potential market; there are a lot of people who are
going to be tempted back to the Amiga fold who might not have been prepared
to buy an AmigaOne but would certainly buy the OS to run on existing hardware.

The only disadvantage I can see is that this is something I've been harping
on about for ages. Delighted as I am to see Amiga Inc. take this step I've
wanted taken for so long, I won't be able to harp on about it any more -
there goes another Rant & Rave topic!

Cheers,
