Oops. I should've mentioned that as far as I could tell the floppy drive
was (and is) working fine - I've used it recently with my sneakernet
between the A4000 and a couple of Wintel machines. But thanks for this
suggestion and especially the one below...

After reading this, a bit of frantic shift pressing during boot and then
playing with the space bar had me on the right path. Looks like somehow my
flicker fixer became misconfigured. Some adjustments in PicassoModeTNG and
all's well now. I've been able to get the early boot menu once again and
although I haven't tried it as yet, my guess is booting from floppy should
work now. (I'm making the assumption that the problem was that trying the
standard workbench floppy, for example, which doesn't have P96 installed
it was booting into modes which couldn't be displayed. If I'm wrong on
this one I'll be sure to be back :))

Anyhow, thank you very much Pekka. Once again, we see two heads are
better than one. Especially when one of them hasn't got "argh I paid so
much money for this PIV just a year or so ago and now it's going flakey on
me!" in the back of its mind. Once again, thanks Pekka.

Regards
