Hi , on the subject of [amigactive] Re: Napster gone?, you said:

Paula's output @ 44khz, with carefully calibrated 14bit actually compares well
against a £30 PC soundcard, in many respects. Its low frequency response is
almost always comprable or better. The overall dynamic range of the PC
soundcard will usually win, but not by anything really noticeable. Of course
a lot depends on the content of the audio file you are playing.

The loss of two bits isn't actually all that noticeable. Despite the 16 bit
output having a range of 16777216 voltage levels, and 14bit only having
4194304, at 44khz the audible difference is negligable, especially as a lot
depends on the quality of the DACs.

Another factor is whether or not the user has just spent £1000+ on a PC with
nice soundcard, which tends to cause a bias towards the PC :)

At the end of the day, Paula can output very clear, crisp sound with an
impressive low frequency response (considering her age, and that she come as
standard in a home computer, this is very impressive). Whether or not she
sounds better than your PC soundcard depends on A) how much you spent on said
PC soundcard, and B) what you are playing.
