Having just changed my credit card number and had to go through the
process again, I'm sure you do. Threy put a $1 charge on your card, to
verify it is valid. Then you quote back the reference number that
appears against this charge to get it credited to your account and the
card activated.

Not for the buyers. Once set up, the payment is simply deducted from
your bank account whenever it is due. It's the hoops you have to jum[p
through to get authority to collect direct debits that put vendors off.

Those people can already buy from the web site by credit/debit card.
This thread was about using a direct debit system to pay regularly for
subscription copies, instead of paying for a year up front.
