I use:-
Echo "*E[31;42;>2m*E[0;0H*E[J"
Prompt "*E[35;41;>1m %n.%s> *E[37;41;>1m"
In my shell-startup. This gives me a black background, with different coloured
text for the prompt and the unput/output.
