hi,
errr? is this supposed to be 'news' about the performance of PPC cards?
its nothing new...we all KNOW that if you have OS-intensive functions
(Under AmigaOS all screen operations hit the 68k as theres no PPC gfx
library, all disk access is 68k, all access to libraries - fonts, MUI etc
are 68k) then you are taking SERIOUS cache-flush hits. the dreaded
'context switches'.
there are times when programs on the PPC are blindly faster than even a
50/060. Games that use almost all PPC action (HereticII, Wipeout2097,
QuakeWOS) would be unplayable on 68k. Imagine 6 CUP is a fine application
example.
Whilst the rest of the OS sits in 68k land we cant do anything about this.
which is why AmigaOS4.x is a must.....which is why people are raving about
MorphOS.
lets give the PPC its best environment...a stage where its lack of
L2-cache (because of the 68k presence) isnt such a hinderance. a stage
where we can plug in a full PPC (with all the cache trimmings and REALLY
see things fly).
Boy , you thought Win 3.11 flew like a silver bullet on a 1.4GHz Athlon -
you wait 'til you see AmigaOS native on a 500Mhz G4! ;-)
