Just a thought as I had a similar problem.
When running in a 80X600 screenmode on my ancient 15" monitor nothing
appeared to be drawn, changing to a higher resolution then I could see
something being drawn, however it was difficult to read the text on
any of the buttons :-) becauseof my ancient fuzzy monitor.
Howver don't have that problem now as I just bought a nice new 19"monitor
:-)
