I should think that's because your machine is relatively new, and almost
certainly uses a PS/2 mouse instead of a serial one. RS232 serial mice
(specifically those with a fixed transmission rate of 1200bps) are the only
ones to suffer from the jerky update syndrome. Even combo Serial/PS/2 mice
are generally only jerky when used in serial mode!
