FreeWheel can generate scrolling events when a button is held down, so it
does work with this kind of mouse (3-button mice!) But it's also possible
for scroll mice to have quite bizarre gadgets for scrolling: I've got one
here with a weird little joystick thing on it, and I've seen them with a sort
of laptop trackpad for scrolling!

True, but you can get bitten that way too - Logitech had an OEM model mouse a
while back - from the outside identical to the regular models, except for a
greyscale logo instead of a colour one - and it didn't support Intellimouse
emulation for scrolling (which nearly all scroll mice do, and which is
required by EZMouse - and at one time by XFree86 too). A number of people
got caught with mice they couldn't use under Linux...
