Are you using a PowerFlyer? I had the same problem where I was affraid to
turn the thing off (It's on 24/7 anyway because of RC5) because I knew that
when I turned it back on it wouldn't boot.
Getting it to boot would involve taking the whole system appart and messing
about with the PowerFlyer.
My conclusion was that the PowerFlyer was a bit dodgy. Either there was a
hair-line crack in the PowerFlyer or there was a short somewhere. The PF
gets moved about quite a bit when attaching IDE cables and such so maybe
this has happened to yours. Just by having the system 'heating up' and
move parts enough to make contact if there is a crack somewhere.
Does the drives turn on and off for no reason at all during use? This did
happen to mine before I decided to replace it. The old one is currently in
an unmodifies A1200 desktop and seems to work fine.
Hope I haven't alarmed you but this might be the reason if you have a PF.
