Of course there are reasons for newer versions. However, the improvements,
fixes, whatever aren't always in the part you are using. Eg., improvements
or fixes in the write part of libpng don't affect the reader. If you don't
expand your data to RGBA any changes in that part don't affect your code.
Therefore its not always necessary to update to a newer version. If the
only reason is "i use the latest/greatest" then something is wrong.

Read the History of the guide. This will tell you what you want to know.

Are you relying on the data provided on the webpage/guide or did you
do tested it yourself? About reliablity, the datatypes I am using are
pretty reliable. I have no reason to replace them.
However, I am biased ;-)
