I've checked the mail only today so I'm a bit late on the topic. I've
been working for quite some time now on a portable software sprite
engine that I'll be using for a game which needs an isometric engine.
Basically the sprite engine uses a segment-buffer (like the ones for
3d engines) for software-clipping the primitives thus reducing the
transfer to VRAM only to what needs effectively to be drawn. It'll
take some more weeks to finish it up but if you're interested I can
send you the code. BTW in fact it does much more than just drawing
sprites to the screen with clipping, it does internally z-sorting, Im
working on fast routines for collision detection (using quad-trees),
behavioural animation, particles, special fx, etc...
