There should have been software with the interface. It's also been updated a
couple of times since too.

Erm, I have the EIDE 99 from Elbox. I've had it for ages, and I've *NEVER*
had trouble with it. I also run OS3.9 and use the interface on 2 hard
drives - one of them 17Gb with only 3 partitions.
I also never get the upgrade message unless I choose to load the preference
program. Sounds to me like you never installed the software correctly -
which of course you say you never had. No wonder you had problems if the
software wasn't installed!
I don't suppose you got the manual either then, didn't you think that was a
little strange - or was the interface bought 2nd hand?
Don't blame the hardware it works fine, well on my set up anyway.
