A couple of "obvious" votes, AlienBreed 3D and 3D II. AB3D used to make me
jump due to its atmospheric sounds etc., but the worst part was the last
level when you first catch sight of .... THE RED THING .... and "Boom!", a
rocket launcher hits home - doesn't the bugger run too! I remember playing
this with my ex's nipper and we were both sh*tting it! :-) AB3D II: the red
robots, and the yellow insect-men, yikes! oh and the pesky Inca chiefs.
Or .. the "Berserker" in Warhead?
Or .. in the good old days of v1.2 there was a left-right-fire shoot-em-up
called (I think) Viper? This had the scariest attack waves and sound
effects. Often hundreds of critters would by flying at tortuous speeds all
over the screen in and out of your player space. Some of them would hover
menacingly then wobble and DROP like a stone! Hard to explain why this was
scary but it was, really creepy - at later levels you would find your heart
pumping as you didn't know what to expect and where to hide.
