Depends what DVD player you are using. The majority do have this copy
protection feature, but you can get unlock codes, mod-chips etc. that bypass
it.

My DVD player for example, purchased pre-modified from Techtronics
(http://www.techtronics.com) is multi-region, and doesn't have this
"red-stripe" protection system (called Macrovision IIRC, or VCR mode, or
something) and can even play back RCE titles (Regional Coding Enhancement).

In short, get one of these and you can pretty much do what you like with it
:)
