All of the Gloom games are scary. No really, they are. By Zombie
Massacre I managed to control myself, but in the original, I was
frequently terrified by the Terras and the raptors. The sounds
probably made the game as scary as it was. Raptor shrieks and the
wails of phantoms, etc. The other thing was that you couldn't see
very far into the distance, it being dark. I seem to remember Gloom 3
(admittedly very crude, but in a way still scary) took advantage of
this in the last levels I could play up to. Gloom 3 may not have been
the scariest, but by heavens it was HARD.

What on eath would the cover of the magazine look like? Some skeleton
hiding behind a swivel chair, cowering at the unbelieveably scary
image of an Amiga running Bubble n Squeak, perhaps?

You must have thought that in between trips to the toilet that it was
an original idea of perspective. That's why I only ever played the 5
level demo.

Hang on, it ripped off Sonic The Hedgehog bonus level idea.
