You always need more than you have, or want it anyway. I was impressed
when I upgraded from a 2X to 4X, now my 8X drive is too slow :(
Even if you don't need 24X, 16X will be available for peanuts next year.
There's no sense in advance buying in a market that has so much negative
inflation.

No, no. It's not that Plextor aren't doing SCSI, it's that they aren't
doing anything but IDE.
