Hi John,
Some versions of the EIDE buffered interface software actually install an
older version of setpatch, which naturally causes problems when trying to
boot into OS 3.9. You should have your CD in the drive and check it against
the one on your hard drive, and if different replace it with the one from
the CD.
There are other programs such as Colonisation which also alter setpatch when
installed onto a hard drive, my suggestion is whenever you install any
software to keep an eye on what installer is doing to your system.
